Elizabeth is so GORGEOUS, and such a wonderful model. We had such a fabulous day – such a relaxing afternoon.

Impromptu Carnival

Elizabeth and I were driving down Haywood Road in Greenville on the way to meet up with the lovely Kimmiepie, when what did we see before our eyes? A carnival, right in the middle of the mall parking lot. I must admit, it was kind of odd to see a giant ferris wheel loom across the night sky on the side of a busy street, but it was there all the same. So, after eating a delicious dinner of Thai food and tea, we drove back down to check it out.

Carnivals are such an odd animal with so many contradictions. Yet they hold a certain magic within them that attracts one and all to their brightly-lit bonanza of garish lighting, fried food, carnival workers, and potential death at every fun ride door. Where else in America…heck, the world…. could you find a stick of deep-fried butter, and be okay eating it? I’ve never tried it… I just don’t have the guts, but I know people who have. Those lights, no matter how tacky, are beautiful in the way they reflect off the stainless steel and pavement, and there’s a certain comfort that you can always fit in at a carnival, no matter what age you are…..

We had to pull the camera out and do a photo shoot at 11 o’clock at night…. it was a necessity. Enjoy!

I had to take a picture of the strung-up animals on a chain…and thought of the interesting images we are subjected to as children. Morbid, no? But a part of a day at the carnival nonetheless… and I love it! And I nearly tore one of the giant stuffed Dexters off the shelf – but I took a picture of them instead. It made me feel better that they didn’t look exactly like Dexter, because they had blue eyes, and Dexter has those soulful brown ones. But still..I really wanted to run away with one. Good thing I”ve got the real thing at home

Sarah and Mary – Fashion Shoot on the Tracks

I was in Greenville the other weekend, and had a total blast photographing Sarah and Mary by some railroad tracks! Columbia SC Photographer – Edson Photo Shoot

The week before my bridal shower, I went out with Edson downtown to take some photographs for his portfolio. I have to tell you, it was a great time! Edson is Aline’s son. Who is Aline, you may ask? Aline is the BEST masseuse in the entire world. She is from Brazil, and is trained both in Brazil and certified here in the United States as a massage therapist. Her daughter, Brisa,was also one of my flower girls in my wedding! So adorable! If you need a massage, please check out her website at windbeings.com and definitely give her a call!

Anyway, Edson and I spent time downtown, and then drove over to one of my favorite photo spots with some great railroad tracks to grab a few more dramatic shots. He is definitely photogenic! Check out some of these shots that were taken as a train happened to come by the same time we were shooting the photographs! It’s the second time I’ve been lucky enough to have the train rush by during a photo shoot, and it looks so awesome to see the lights and smoke behind my model!

Having a little fun and goofing around – my photo shoots always have LOTS of laughs and good times! It’s such a blessing to be able to share my love for photography with people I might not have met otherwise.

South Carolina Fashion Photography – Annette

Last weekend, Annette and I had a really nice day hanging out together. It wasn’t just any ordinary day, however…we were on a mission. Thwarted by the boxy, bow-tie renditions of baby tuxes that were the only options available to use at Men’s Wearhouse, we set out on an expedition to dress little Kingston (who is going to be my ringbearer at my wedding on March 20) in a proper-fitting suit. I mean – those baby tuxes at the After Dark store made him look like Spongebob! Kingston can look adorable in anything, but he also deserves the best. So we spent 2 hours at Burlington Coat Factory, and after he played in the dressing rooms, jumped around in the shiny black shoes with the loud soles, visited the Korean alteration lady, and wiggled around like the most adorable little worm you’ve ever seen – we found him an AWESOME suit to wear! He’s going to have a little vest and regular tie – just like the groomsmen! Pictures are a surprise – after the wedding. But I do have pictures from that day. We went out to dinner, got him some Yogen Früz (which I’m now in love with), and even stopped on the side of the road to chase some gorgeous light. Enjoy – and leave a comment!

Soulhood

Sorry for the delay in almost a week since my last posting! I have been extremely sick with bronchitis, an ear infection and a sinus infection – all at once! It hit me Sunday night and by Monday morning, I felt like death warmed over. Thank goodness for CVS Minute Clinic! Today is the first time I’ve been able to stay awake more than a few hours without being exhausted, so I thought I’d post some photographs from this weekend. I appreciate everyone wishing me well – I’m slowly feeling a little better. It’s going to take a few more days of being in bed to be at 100% again, but I’m grateful it’s better than earlier this week!

And now – onto the good stuff! Brian Manigo is a new up-and-coming R&B/hip-hop artist who is looking at busting into the scene with his music. His new album, Soulhood, should be released soon. He writes, produces, and sings, among other things! Quite a talent! We met in downtown Columbia to photograph promotional shots early Saturday morning. We had a great time, and I was able to get some amazing photographs! Here is just a sample of the many shots we took!

The security guard inside this building downtown was nice enough to let me get a few shots in before we were officially kicked out. It’s ok – I’m willing to trespass for a good photo! (Until they tell me to go away… hehehe)

Every hip-hop artist needs a pretty girl to back him up! We found one, and took advantage of the awesome area around the house!

What to Wear

“Stephanie, what should I wear?”

This is one of the most common questions I hear before a photo shoot. I truly think I’m blessed with the most gorgeous clients every time, and I want you to be dressed dapper and photo-friendly, so I decided to write a small post about some of the tips I’ve gained along the way. While I am not the devil in Prada, I do know a little about what will look good in your photographs now – and perhaps more importantly, in years to come. After all, we don’t exactly display those acid-washed pleated jeans portraits all over our houses anymore, do we?

All kidding aside, my job is to capture you at your best. That being said, here are a few tips of what I feel look best on a family shoot:

Clothes in the same color family. Warm colors, Cool Colors, Pastels, etc. Colors that complement each other look fantastic in a shoot. I have a personal rule as an artist that I refuse to take pictures of a family that is exactly matching. It’s just wrong. Trust me. It’s for your sake, also. The goal is coordinating. Please, no white or one-color schemes. NO jeans and black turtlenecks. No khakis with white shirts. Please. I PROMISE you’ll be happy you didn’t. It’s cute in the moment, but not forever.
Everyone should be in the same style, i.e. dressy, casual, beachwear, etc. It doesn’t work if Uncle Bob shows up in jeans and a t-shirt when everyone else is in a suit and tie.

Such a beautiful family!

If everyone wants to be different, you can pull everyone together with the same accent color. Someone can wear red shoes, another a red hat, red bow, etc. CUTE!
Solids and simple patterns are best. When it gets too busy or you put writing on the clothes, then the attention is taken away from the most important part of the photo – you! No cartoon characters or logos – it won’t look good.
White is almost never a great color as the primary choice for the wardrobe palette. Cream is okay, but all white…eh….nope.
Don’t wear baggy clothing, and alternatively, don’t wear clothing that is too tight. Wear clothing that fits you well. Comfortable clothes that you can move around in are great!
I LOVE TEXTURES! Corduroys, denim, cottons, knits, sweaters, leather boots, etc.
It’s all about deciding what kind of look you are going for. Layers are great for visual interest – it adds depth and appeal to an image, so try a vest over a button-up shirt or wearing a jacket or sweater, tights or leggings with a dress or skirt, etc. The simple look is also nice; a flowing dress or plain tee and jeans can look great next to a busy or grungy backdrop or location.

The simple look is also best for babies, because their expressions are what really make the pictures gorgeous and interesting! They look best in a cute, simple outfit with minimal print so that their personalities show through most. Newborns look best in nothing at all, to allow for elaborate posing while they are sleeping!
With kids, the most important rule is KEEP IT COMFORTABLE. We want happy faces, not itchy or pinched ones!

I love to show off the personality of your children. These are heirlooms and keepsakes that will last a lifetime, so don’t be afraid to bring his/her favorite stuffed animal or the blanket that he/she refuses to let go of. It’s an integral part of their life right now, and we must document it! If it’s dirty, try to sneak it away while they’re sleeping for a trip to visit Mr. Washing Machine before your session for the cutest cringe-free pictures.

For everyone, be fashionable, but try to stick to classic styles. Remember the acid-washed jeans? The HUGE bangs? These photographs don’t live on the walls for long. Classic styles stay in homes from generation to generation. You definitely don’t have to be boring, but just keep this tidbit in mind when you’re picking out clothing, makeup and hairstyles for you and your family.
Use accessories rather than the clothes to add flair.
Boots, hats, jackets, jewelry, or shoes will add personality and style.

Be colorful! Saturated colors complementing your skin tone look great!

Please remember – these are all just overall suggestions, and when it comes down to it, it’s about capturing WHO YOU ARE. Wear what you want, as long as you are happy, comfortable and camera-ready!!

My Gorgeous Sister

A few weeks ago, my sister visited and we spent some time hanging out, relaxing, having sister time, and OF COURSE having a PHOTO SHOOT!!! We had tons of fun dressing her up in a sleek black ballgown, playing with the props in my studio, and generally just capturing how beautiful she is. That girl really loves the camera! Jessie and I decided to brave the rainy weather on Sunday and have a photo shoot. I’ve never seen anyone look hotter in wet, muggy, humid weather than Jessie did! She looked amazing, and the lighting was great – the clouds acted as a natural diffuser! There are many, many more photos to come – including photos where I caught Jessie being a peeping Tom, lol, but here’s a little preview for now!

I love that we caught that Mercedes going by just as she turned her head! I’m also pleased that it was an older one.. it adds to the look of the photo…

You’ve gotta give Jessie props for climbing that ladder, in the rain, in HEELS. Rock it, girl!

Annette’s Magazine Pictures

After her bridal portraits, Annette got dressed and got back in front of the camera for some fun, casual shots. I love the attitude she exudes in these pictures! Annette is such a natural in front of the camera! I see the pictures from this shoot as showing up in a magazine article featuring her. I’ve got some creative sparks going, so I may even whip up a faux mag article for fun to show you what I’m envisioning.

Sunflowers and a Gathering

This past weekend I went to Greenville to hang out with some friends I saw recently, and some I haven’t seen in ten years! I met up with Michelle on Saturday to grab a bit to eat before our high school reunion. We didn’t go to the actual reunion – we planned a separate “gathering of souls” event at the Irish Pub for those of us who didn’t want to pay $1oo for tickets per couple. We had an AMAZING time – such a great time, in fact, that we had no idea it was 2am until the employees started last call. Before all that, however, Michelle and I decided to trespass in the name of photography. For months, we have been talking about taking pictures in front of this beautiful field of sunflowers EVERY time we drove by it on the way to/from her house, but we never had the guts to actually stop. You see, they are on the side of a VERY busy road where people don’t bother to slow down for any reason, and it’s on private property. Saturday, we decided to go for it. I parked my car on the other side of the road, we ran across the street after talking to the neighbor who just happened to be the landowner’s brother(!), got permission, and took some AWESOME pictures with the sunflowers!!! Yay! I’ll post all of them on my website soon, but here’s a preview:

I have definitely found a passion in boudoir photography. Don’t get me wrong – I love ALL photography. It’s the way I express myself. I go into withdrawal if I’m not able to take photographs! There is something about boudoir photography that makes me feel wonderful, because I am helping to show other women how beautiful they truly are. You don’t have to be Megan Fox to look amazing in a photo shoot. I can provide the lighting, posing, coaching, and retouching skills necessary to make your photographs ready for Maxim magazine! The great thing about boudoir photography is that it celebrates your curves. It’s sensual, but classy and tasteful at the same time. It’s not about being a size 0. It’s about your confidence and attitude about yourself in front of the camera, and I’m here to make sure it’s the best experience possible! I’ve already done a few shoots with some amazing, gorgeous, sexy women, and I’m super excited about the shoots I’ve got scheduled these next few months. If you’re planning on scheduling one of these shoots, please remember that they look best when displayed in an gorgeous album for your special man to flip through when he misses you. It’s definitely a present he will never forget, and will always cherish!
