Over the past few months, I have been getting the idea in my head to redesign our guest bathroom. We purchased our home about 2 1/2 years ago, and have enjoyed being homeowners more than I ever thought possible! While there is a lot of responsibility, there is an immense sense of satisfaction in coming home to your home, and being able to paint, remodel, etc. whenever you want to.
That said, the previous owners pretty much left the guest bathroom the way it was when it was first built about 12 years ago. It still had that mass-produced feel to it, with yellowish-matte paint, bright silver square towel rods, and a strip of lighting above the mirror. Several months ago, my dad helped me change out the vanity lighting, so now it’s a really nice glass and brushed-nickel finish fixture.
I want our guest bathroom to have a spa-like, relaxing feel for us and all of our guests, and I wanted it to be a little different than the standard taupe that you see in many homes, although that is generally my favorite look. So a few weeks ago, Otman and I went to Lowe’s and picked out some paint, and I spent the entire weekend painting!
A few things I want to mention to anyone planning on painting their room based on my experience:
1. Valspar HD Ultra Premium Paint – fantastic color accuracy compared to the paint chip – but it can be runny, so make sure you aren’t painting it on too thick.
2. Frog Tape – the BEST painter’s tape I have ever used. It definitely works just like in the commercials.
3. Sanding your walls, even just a little, before painting – then vacumming the dust with a brush – gives your walls a much smoother finish and cuts down on touch-ups.
The other day I went and got some new hardware and a new space saver to add to the spa theme, and then I went and bought new towels from JC Penney. I still want to repaint the trim and re-caulk around the sink and bathtub in order to have everything be fresh and new. I was too excited and gung-ho to take before pictures, but I will definitely blog with some after pictures when it’s all done, if you want me to!
Here’s my inspiration board I created to develop the look I wanted in my guest bathroom. I included the products I am using in the bathroom, but still haven’t decided on which shower curtain I’m going to use. Let me know what you think!
